Joel Heinrich continues winning ways at the Island, but series leader strikes trouble

Osborn’s Transport driver Joel Heinrich has taken victory in what may go down as a title defining race at Round 6 of the Battery World Aussie Racing Cars Super Series at Phillip Island.

Storming from the sixth row, Heinrich emerged victorious following a battle with Western Sydney Motorsport’s Cody Brewczynski.

Battery World Aussie Racing Cars Super Series leader heading into the round was Kody Garland, but his race ended in engine failure as the race concluded.

Corish Motorsport’s Andre Corish started from pole following the lucky draw after Race 2 to share the front row alongside rookie Jacob Currie for Precision International.

It was Currie making the best jump heading into Turn 1, but Corish soon regained the lead.

Guardian Interlock Services/Motorsport25’s Reece Chapman ran wide at Turn 1 through the sand trap and re-joined safely, but lost plenty of spots.

Masters Cup contender Cody Mckay had a moment through Turn 9, but only lost one position to Brewczynski.

Heinrich was scything his way through the field and was up to third, which was in stark contrast to Garland, who remained in only ninth.

Brewczynski hit the lead at Turn 4 on lap 3, but Heinrich was up to second just 0.222s behind.

A thrilling battle had formed between Scott Dornan in the Action Line Marking entry and leading Rookie Cup driver Mason Harvey for Corish Motorsport, but Currie alongside Corish remained in the fight and Garland was making ground.

Dornan threw away third outright and the Gold Cup lead when he spun at Turn 1.

Heinrich was putting the pressure on Brewczynski for the lead, but the latter was holding on as the gap back to Harvey in third was 5s.

Garland had now elevated up to third displacing Harvey as these two also enjoyed a comfortable gap back to Currie in fifth.

Heinrich snatched the lead and was starting to gap Brewczynski, with Garland battling Harvey for the final podium spot.

Smoke bellowed from Currie’s Precision International entry after an impressive performance off the front row.

The midfield battles were spectacular led by Riskie Racing teammates Brandon Madden and Scott Andriske. This also included Nathan Williams of Competition Coatings leading Rookie Cup’s Lachlan Evennett of WLM Motorsport, Ballarat Performance Auto Wreckers driver Jack Boyd and Mckay.

However, the race ended under safety car due to pole sitter Corish stopping entering Turn 4 and a large engine failure for series leader Garland exiting Turn 2.

This makes Heinrich’s victory from Brewczynski and Rookie Cup winner Harvey very important in terms of the title battle.

Behind the lead three was the recovering Chapman, Madden, Williams, Evennett, Boyd, Mckay and Andriske.

Harvey led Evennett and Boyd in the Rookie Cup standings.

Masters Cup was secured by Mckay from Norganic Proteins-supported Kent Quinn and the returning Asher Johnston in the Johnston Craill Racing Enterprises entry.

Dornan in the end scooped Gold Cup honours from Variety Racing’s Brendon Tucker and Emma Clark for Mable.

Round 6 of the Battery World Aussie Racing Cars Super Series concludes with Race 4 at 4:05pm AEST.
