Joel Heinrich dominates opening race of season finale

It was a dominating display from Joel Heinrich as he takes step closer to back-to-back Battery World Aussie Racing Cars Super Series titles by taking Race 1 on the Gold Coast.

Heinrich led the way from the start as Guardian Interlock Services’ Reece Chapman separated the series leader from his pursuers.

MTA NSW’s Kody Garland and Cody Brewczynski for Western Sydney Motorsport were not far behind, but were unable to find a way past during the early stages.

However, Garland was able to move through on Chapman at Turn 4 just prior to a safety car due to Grant Thompson hitting the outside wall exiting the Beach Chicane at the back of the circuit.

This closed Heinrich’s 2s margin down to nil as the stricken Western Sydney Motorsport/Thrifty entry was removed from the track.

It was a late launch by Heinrich at the restart, however he reinstated his lead by the end of the race ending a comfortable winner from Garland and Chapman.

Brewczynski was forced to defend from a late Josh Thomas challenge, but the TFH Hire Services driver was forced to settle for fifth.

Mason Harvey was sixth to lead the Rookie Cup from Masters Cup winner Kent Quinn for Norganic Proteins, Riskie Racing’s Scott Andriske, Courtney Prince of Corish Motorsports and Nathan Williams for Competition Coatings.

Behind Quinn in Masters Cup were Craig Thompson of Western Sydney Motorsport and Cody Mckay.

Scott Dornan continued the Gold Cup narrative this season in scoring victory in the Action Line Marking entry from Fight MND’s Jeff Watters and Denis Butler for Team Grand Racing.

Rookie Cup honours went to Thomas from Harvey and Diesel Thomas. Jordan Freestone dropped out of the podium places after tangling with Gold Cup polesitter Matt Gooding on the final lap resulting in the latter hitting the wall.

Race 2 begins the racing program tomorrow at 9:35am.
