It was a dominating display from MTA NSW’s Kody Garland as he took his second victory of Sunday action at Symmons Plains in Tasmania to completed Round 5 of the Aussie Racing Cars Super Series.
Garland led from start-to-finish as he fought off Western Sydney Motorsport’s Cody Brewczynski to take the race and round victory, his second on the trot after success in Townsville.
Guardian Interlock Services/Motorsport 25’s Reece Chapman crossed the line second after a late-race move on Brewczynski, but these positions may be swapped both race.
It proved crucial in the title fight as Garland’s chief rival, reigning series winner Joel Heinrich failed to finish.
Garland led the way from pole-sitter Brewczynski off the start, which was delayed due to Ryan Reynolds stopping on track in the Jascott Civil/Reynovate Constructions entry capping off a disappointing weekend.
Chapman was holding the Osbron’s Transport Mustang of Heinrich at bay, with Andrew Corish slowing behind and dropping to ninth.
This elevated Riskie Racing’s Brandon Madden, Competition Coatings driver Nathan Williams and lead Masters Cup runner Cody Mckay.
Chapman was unable to hold Heinrich behind and the series leader took third, but almost immediately slowed.
Regaining third, Chapman was holding onto the leaders as Harvey took fourth from Madden.
After a stellar weekend up to this point, Mckay slowed to the back of the field as it was pure chaos through mid-pack, but importantly was kept clean.
A safety car was called due to David Makin finding the gravel trap at Turn 4 in the Axil Coffee Roasters entry.
Garland held the lead at the restart from Brewczynski as Williams made an early jump, but still slotted back into the same position.
There was chaos at the end of the lap as Action Line Marking’s Scott Dornan and Norganic Proteins driver Kent Quinn both ended up in the sand trap leading to double yellows being waved at the final sector.
When the leaders entered this area, Garland was well clear as behind Chapman made a pass on Brewczynski to take second though the positions may swap post-race due to the double yellows.
Harvey continued his superb run since replacing an engine to finish fourth from Madden, Williams, Corish, Jordan Freestone, Property Compliance Australia’s Matt Gooding and Craig Thompson of Western Sydney Motorsport, who also picked up the Masters Cup win.
Gooding secured the Gold Cup win from Jeff Watters for Sciberras Racing/Fight MND and Team Grand Racing’s Denis Butler.
Jacob Currie completed the Rookie Cup top three for Precision International from Corish Motorsport teammates Harvey and Freestone.
Thompson secured Masters Cup ahead of MSS Group’s Scott O’Keefe and Mckay.
The next round of the Battery World Aussie Racing Cars Super Series will be as support to the Mi-Bike Australian Superbike Championship at Phillip Island on September 7-8.
