Kody Garland fights off challenges to win Race 3 in Tasmania

MTA NSW’s Kody Garland has secured victory in the inverted grid Race 3 for Round 5 of the Battery World Aussie Racing Cars Super Series at Symmons Plains.

Garland charged his way through the field as cruel luck for Ryan Reynolds ended his chances of victory after leading the early stages.

The top 12 were inverted on the grid, which were based on yesterday’s finishing positions.

Garland held off a late challenge from Cody Brewczynski as Reece Chapman took the final podium position ahead of series leader Joel Heinrich of Osborn’s Transport.

It was pole-sitter Josh Thomas for TFH Hire Services making the best jump at the start, but it was Reynolds leading into the hairpin for Jascott Civil/ Reynovate Constructions.

It was great clean racing for second as Thomas held back Riskie Racing’s Brandon Madden and Scott Andriske.

By lap 3, Garland had already reached third from the fifth row of the grid as Heinrich struggled to make progress in 10th.

Andriske dropped back to seventh as Garland was now in pursuit of Reynolds in second.

Action was on for fourth as Guardian Interlock Services driver Chapman was holding back Gold Cup leader Scott Dornan for Action Line Marking. Race 1 winner Brewczynski was making progress and so was Heinrich.

It was devastation for Reynolds as he slowed then stopped on the outside of Turn 6 leading to a safety car.

It was a quick interruption as an eager pack took the restart a lap later as Garland led away there was contact back in the field as Madden collided with Nathan Williams in the Competition Coatings entry leading to contact with the armco at Turn 3. Damage forced Williams into retirement.

Garland led, but only just from Brewczynski as the battle for third included Chapman, Dornan and Heinrich.

Comeback of the race was in sixth, Corish Motorsports driver Mason Harvey led the Rookie Cup in sixth outright after an engine change overnight and a net gain of 20 positions.

At the front, there was contact on the start-finish line between Garland and Brewczynski, but the duo were left to fight another day.

Despite the best efforts of Brewczynski, Garland held onto to take his fifth victory of the season as Chapman held out Heinrich for the final podium place.

Harvey took Rookie Cup honours in fifth from Gold Cup winner Dornan, Madden, Andrew Corish, with the Masters Cup top three in Western Sydney Motorsport’s Craig Thompson, yesterday’s victor Cody Mckay and the Norganic Proteins entry of Kent Quinn filling out 11th.

Behind Harvey in Rookie Cup was Corish Motorsport teammate Jordan Freestone and Des Collier for TFH Hire Services.

Matt Gooding in the Property Compliance Australia entry was second in Gold Cup to Dornan as Jeff Watters filled out the rostrum for Sciberras Racing/Fight MND.

The final race of the weekend for the Battery World Aussie Racing Cars Super Series at Symmons Plains is scheduled for 11:40am AEST live on Kayo/Foxtel.
