Reigning Battery World Aussie Racing Cars Series presented by TFH winner Joel Heinrich made it two from two with victory in Race 2 of the opening round at Sydney Motorsport Park.
The Osborn’s Transport pilot came out on top in a hard-fought and controversial battle with MTA NSW’s Kody Garland, while the Corish Motorsports’ entry of Mason Harvey completed the podium.
At the start it was Reece Chapman for Motorsport25/Racer Industries, who started best and had the lead from Garland, as Heinrich lurked on the first lap. Chapman dropped back to fourth before pulling out of the race into retirement.
Garland took over the lead through to a safety car deployment for Josh Andersen after he ran out of luck again to stop the Corish Motorsport entry at Turn 6. Later top Rookie Caleb Paterson in the Norganic Proteins entry suffered another failure when he pulled off after Turn 8, which didn’t necessitate another cautionary period.
Behind the leading trio it was also a tight tussle for fourth where Action Line Marking’s Scott Dornan held off the first of the Johnston Craill Racing Enterprise entry of Jack Boyd, while the pair were shadowed to the line by Ryan Reynolds.
The Jascott Civil/Reynovate Construction entry of Reynolds was a DNF in Race 1 and stormed through to finish clear of Competition Coatings’ Nathan Williams, who was another to come from the rear of the grid.
Close behind Williams were MSS Group’s Scott O’Keefe and Brett Osborn in the second Osborn’s Transport entry, while Western Sydney Motorsport’s Craig Thompson didn’t manage a lap in Race 1, but completed the top 10 and will start from pole position for Race 3.
While Heinrich took the Championship honours, Dornan was the Gold Cup victor and The Master Cup class win went to O’Keefe.
Race 2 Rookie award was taken out by Kyle Lovering of K&S Motorsport.
Round 1 at the Motorsport Trophy Tour opener continues on Sunday with the inverted grid Race 3 scheduled for 10:55 am AEDT and final outing at 12:55 pm.
